Inside the early 19th century, the new settlement that would turn into Matthews was unofficially named "Stumptown" for the copious volume of tree stumps remaining from generating way for cotton farms. The Neighborhood's title afterwards modified to Fullwood, named following appointed spot postmaster John Miles Fullwood. The institution of a sawmill
